Documentary, photojournalism and straight photography are genres that tend to treat the photographic image as transparent , that is to say they use photography in such a way as to
direct the viewer to subject matter depicted in a realistic
or naturalistic way. Yet other photographers, particularly of the early twentieth century, made images that verged on
abstraction. Choose two different images by two different photographers (one example per photographer) who have employed two different techniques to achieve this abstract or nearly
abstract effect, and compare and contrast them. Explain their respective aims, techniques and art historical contexts in detail.
Be sure to identify the photographers and give the dates and
titles of the images.
